BPU Discusses Electric Bill Scammers

The Jamestown Board of Public Utilities is warning the community about potential scam calls from people claiming to want to talk about their electric bills.

During the BPU’s May meeting, board member Marie Carrubba said she received two different phone calls within the span of five minutes at her office, claiming to want to talk about her municipal electric bill.

“It wasn’t about our municipal electric, but our electric service,” Carrubba said. “One identified as Con Edison, and the other one I can’t recall, but I told them I was on the board of the public municipally owned division and they should stop calling me.”

Carrubba said she wanted to bring this to the attention of the public as she worried that people are going to get these calls and give out their personal information. She noted that after she told them to stop calling they did, but said that the calls were within five minutes of each other and were two different people from two different places. One call came in from Ohio and another from California.

“They claimed to want to talk to me about my electric bill, and I’m worried that people are going to start giving out their personal information,” Carrubba said. “So, if there’s some way to alert the public, if you are getting phone calls from these people they are up to no good and don’t give them any personal information.”

Carrubba added that these types of scammers are trying everything to get people’s information, and that she did not want people to think they were calls from the BPU. Putting out a warning on the BPU and City Municipal Facebook page was discussed during the meeting as well, and posts warning of the scams were posted on Monday. The posts remind city residents that the BPU will never call and ask for payment over the phone, adding that if someone receives a call like this to hang up and call the BPU to confirm their account status. To report a scam or ask questions, call the BPU at (716) 661-1660.
