Wreaths will be laid Dec. 14 on the graves of Deceased military veterans whose final resting place is in Lakeview Cemetery.

Wreaths Across America, in conjunction with the Blue Star Mothers of WNY and other organizations, have joined forces to honor deceased members of the armed forces during the Wreaths Across America Day.

“This year we will lay wreaths at military veteran grave sites at Lakeview Cemetery, Dec. 14, at Soldier Circle – the ceremony will begin at 11:45 a.m.,” said Tony Galati, this year’s event organizer. “It’s an honor to do this.”

In December 2008, the U.S. Senate agreed to a resolution that designated Dec. 13, 2008, as Wreaths Across America Day. Subsequently, National Wreaths Across America Days has since been designated on the second or third Saturday of December. This day tends to draw a vastly large population of military veterans to grave sites across the United States where individuals and organizations lay wreaths in honor of fallen soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, coast guardsmen and now U.S. Space Force guardians.

“The event aims to unite the community in remembrance while encouraging people to also help those in need,” said Todd Hanson, last year’s event organizer, and Jamestown father of three adult children that includes a son who is a military veteran, and two sons who are active duty service members.

For those interested in helping the WAA of Jamestown, donations are accepted through the Blue Star Mothers of WNY.

“For every two wreaths donated through BSM, an additional wreath will be purchased,” said Galati.

According to Galati, the local chapter of Wreaths Across America is seeking donations to sponsor 600 wreaths for the markers of local heroes, including three Medal of Honor recipients resting at Lakeview Cemetery. The deadline for ordering the wreaths is Dec. 3.
