The YWCA of Jamestown is set to honor Hispanic Heritage Month with a Latino-themed festival this weekend.

The YWCA of Jamestown is hosting a festival called the Latinx Festival, Sept. 21, from 4 to 8 p.m. on Fourth Street and Main Street all the way to Cherry Street. in honor of the National Hispanic Heritage Month.

“This is our third year running this event, since I’ve been here,” said Amanda Gesing, the executive director of the YWCA. “We’ve got food trucks, youth games, a disc jockey (DJ), free cotton candy and popcorn, vendors, a bounce house and children’s play area and more.”

Former President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first Hispanic Heritage presidential proclamation on September 17, 1968, according to history.com

Since then, every Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, the United States has honored and acknowledged the contributions and accomplishments of the various Latinos and Hispanic citizens, communities, and how’ve they’ve influenced and contributed to the American society at-large.

“Everyone is welcomed,” Gesing said. “While the event itself is free, along with the games, event goers may want to bring money for the food trucks and vendors. However, we will also have various non-profits who will set up tables too.”

Gesing said, the event fits right into the mission of the YWCA and should be a good time for all who plan on attending.

“With our mission of … eliminating racism and empowering women this was a natural fit,” she said. “What better way to have people communicate and learn about each other’s culture than over food, music and activities for children — a community party.”

Gesing talked about the various prizes which will be offered, and highlighted some of the vendors and table displays which are scheduled to be at the event.

“We have Big Pitts Barbecue and The Resource Center setting up,” she said. “Also, Los Contrincantes Car Club Inc. will be bringing some of their cars to the event. We (YWCA) received funding from the Chautauqua Regional Community Foundation and the Walmart Foundation.”

The importance of the event and what the YWCA is hoping to accomplish has drawn adoration and respect from others in the community.

“YWCA is a great organization. It’s fantastic that they are working to celebrate Hispanic heritage. Diversity makes our communities stronger and more vibrant with life. All communities should be celebrated, and I encourage all people to go celebrate as well as learn about Hispanic culture at the festival,” said Justin Hubbard, the coordinator for the Jamestown Justice Coalition.
