Der Kobblers Car Club Show Winners Named

MAPLE SPRINGS- Midway State Park was overrun on Labor Day – by both children and by old muscle cars, hot rods, classic cars and modern, hip, swanky automobiles.

The Der Knobblers Car Club hosted its annual Labor Day car show Sunday, at the state park located at 4859 Route 430 .

According to Sam Ognibene, the car club’s treasurer, the turnout was great and all had a good time.

“We had between 450 and 500 cars at the show this year,” he said. “We’ve been hosting our Labor Day show here for close to 17 to 20 years.”

Ognibene said all the money made from the show would be donated to local, area good causes.

“We donate all the money we raise from the show to UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center – Jamestown’s Diabetes Education program, and The Roswell Park Alliance Foundation,” he said.

Ognibene said the car club was donating to the diabetes education program with UPMC, but many of the club’s former members had passed away from cancer and complications associated with cancer. The club now takes a two-folded approach to its donating endeavors.

“The club was founded in 1958, and a lot of our older members have passed away because of cancer,” he said.

According to roswellpark.org, the organization is a non-for-profit, 501 (C) 3, charitable foundation with the mission to maximize dollars available for the most promising lifesaving research, treatment and prevention programs, while supporting the psychosocial needs of patients and families touched by cancer. Fundraising events and initiatives are carried out through a partnership between committed Roswell Park Alliance volunteers and foundational staff.

Checking out old cars and donating to great causes seems to fit the bill for some of the show attendees.

“I mean, what a way to end summer,” said Jason Ferraro of Lakewood “We get to check out some really cool hot rods and cars, enjoy the weather and support a good cause or two.”

For 16-year old Alfonso Mendez-Ruiz of Jamestown, looking at some of the restored cars gives him inspiration for his planned upcoming car purchase.

“I love looking at old cars,” he said. “I got to all the car shows to help me figure out what type of car I want to buy and restore. I’m not interested in any modern cars -meaning anything after the 2000s- I like the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s. A person can look under the hood and fix just about anything without having a college degree in engineering.”

The club’s official Facebook page was loaded with compliments, from event attendees, enspoucing what a boon for the area the show was.

“Great show, as usual, for a good cause, a job well done by a great group of people. Look forward to next year,” wrote Stan O’ Rourke.

“It was a fantastic show, congrats to everyone involved in putting this together,” posted Jim Johnson.
