Myrtle Street Porta Potty Generates Complaints

Councilman Bill Reynolds, R-Ward 5, has found himself in the middle of a stinky situation.

A porta potty located outside Fletcher Elementary School has caught the attention of Myrtle Street residents who asked Reynolds to help get the portable toilet moved away from their front windows. The porta potty is located on school property where Jamestown Area Youth Soccer games are played in the summer – but Myrtle Street residents have gotten more of a view than they would like.

“The door opens right to these people’s homes,” Reynolds said. “It’s locked when there’s not soccer players for the JAYS or whatever community groups are there, and I’ve gotten two complaints of seeing kids using it outside – like the back, not inside. So Dan (Stone, city parks manager) and I are working with JAYS to maybe move it around the corner to Smith Avenue where the other soccer field is and also where the dog poop bags are. So we’re trying to work on those things and moving forward on them.”

While it may not have been the most important issue the council would discuss during Monday’s meeting, Reynolds said he appreciated Stone’s work on the matter.

“The little things matter,” Reynolds said.

Reynolds said he is also researching signs for two parks on the south side – one behind Fletcher Elementary School and another near the Kwik Fill on Forest Avenue.

“I have two parks in my ward that don’t have signs,” Reynolds said. “There’s a park at the south end of Fletcher school and there’s two names I’ve seen on different maps – Southridge Park and Beauregard Park. If I can get a definitive answer what the true name of the parks are, Dan Stone is putting together estimates for what signs for that park would be. The park at the triangle at Forest and Hazeltine, right by the Kwik Fill, a sign would be advantageous to put in front of the gas valve where a tree was removed. I’m researching the history, but we could call it Hazeltine Park after a judge, a famous judge, from town.”
