County To Replace Three Bridges

Chautauqua County officials are moving ahead with a plan to replace three bridges – two in the southern end of the county and one in the northern end.

The cost of all three bridges will be nearly $1.3 million, but the majority of the funds are coming from other funding sources.

The first bridge is on Wiltsie Road, Frewsburg. The bridge work is expected to cost $375,000. Of that amount, 95% would be paid by the federal government, leaving Chautauqua County responsible to fund $18,750.

The second bridge is on Summit Avenue in Lakewood. This bridge work is expected to cost $360,000. Of that amount, the federal government would pay $342,000,leaving Chautauqua County to pay $18,000.

The third bridge goes over Crooked Brook on Central Avenue in the city of Dunkirk. This bridge will cost $561,335. Unlike the other two bridge projects, this bridge would be 100% funded through a federal program.

The county legislature gave its approval for all three bridge replacements.

No timeline was announced for the work to begin. According to Drew Rogers with the county’s Department of Public Facilities, the next step is the design phase and then they would go out to bid.

Once the work is complete, Rogers said the county is responsible for future maintenance.

Starting at $2.99/week.
