The Gus Macker 3-on-3 basketball tournament will return to Jamestown in August – but it’s coming to a new location.

The event will once again be led by Collaborative Children’s Solutions and be co-hosted with the City of Jamestown and supported by numerous sponsors including Collaborative Children’s Solutions signature sponsor, the Southern Chautauqua Federal Credit Union.

The tournament was originally scheduled for the site of the 2023 Gus Macker when it was played in Brooklyn Square, but due to construction timelines and the size of the tournament the event has been relocated to the parking lot of the Physical Education Complex of Jamestown Community College on Curtis St., Jamestown.

“Jamestown Community College once again has answered the bell as a key community partner in Western New York by offering the campus of Jamestown Community College as the site of the 2024 Gus Macker 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament,” said Patrick Smeraldo, Collaborative Children’s Solutions president. “JCC understands the impact an event like this can have on our community and immediately stepped up, put together a team and began the process of walking the Macker committee through the process of how best to utilize the campus and surrounding areas.”

There are two building projects scheduled for this summer in Brooklyn Square. The former Friendly’s Restaurant building was demolished recently to make way for a new, larger Tim Horton’s Restaurant. The former Oriental Star restaurant will be torn down, with a new Northwest Bank branch built in its place.

The start of construction on both projects would have affected the area’s availability to host a larger basketball tournament.

“This has been a trying period but after many site evaluations and meetings with City and JCC Leadership members this literally has been the definition of taking a negative and turning it into a positive with a huge upside for everyone involved,” Smeraldo said.
