City To Create Fees For Travel Baseball, Softball Games In Local Parks

A few groups looking to use city parks are likely to be paying a bit more after May 1.

The agenda for tonight’s City Council voting session includes a resolution approved during last week’s Public Works Committee meeting increasing the fees for travel baseball and softball teams, adult flag football and adult softball teams. The voting session will be held at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the council’s chambers on the second floor of City Hall following public hearings on a new franchise agreement between the city and Spectrum Northeast LLC at 6:45 p.m. and an application for Restore New York Initiative grants to be held at 7 p.m.

Pending approval tonight, new fees for travel baseball and softball teams will be $125 per game, which will include practice time; $200 per team for adult flag football and $365 per team for adult softball teams.

There hasn’t been a fee in place for travel baseball teams using the baseball and softball fields in Jamestown parks, according to a memorandum from Dan Stone, city arborist, to City Council members included in the agenda for last week’s work session. The money will help pay for field maintenance.

“This does not include any use of Russell E. Diethrick Jr. Stadium,” the memo states. “These fees are only to affect travel baseball/softball teams and will not change/alter the agreements in place with the city of Jamestown’s ‘house’ leagues/teams, City Rec league, Jamestown Babe Ruth Baseball or Softball teams/leagues.”

Other items on the council’s agenda tonight include accepting a $5,032.44 disbursement from the Bucks for Baseball fund to help pay for upgrades at Russell E. Diethrick Jr. Park.

“This reflects the remaining balance of the non-endowed fund that will be closed following this disbursement,” wrote Lisa Lynde, Chautauqua Region Community Foundation donor services officer, in a letter to the city. “The non-endowed fund was established in 1993 as a depository for upgrades, renovation and expansion of Diethrick Park.”

Also on the agenda for the council’s approval are grant applications to support the Prendergast Landing project and renovations in the Furniture Mart building; purchase of two new vehicles for the Jamestown Police Department, approval of bids for reconstruction of West Virginia Boulevard and Superior Street; purchase of a new truck for the Public Works Department; and approvals for training for a JPD detective and four fire investigators in the Jamestown Fire Department.
