Volunteers Needed For Smoke Alarm Installation

Volunteers are still needed for the Sound the Alarm smoke alarm installation drive scheduled for Saturday.

Mayor Kim Ecklund said about 90 homes will receive up to four smoke alarms, but there aren’t enough volunteers to install them all.

“This Saturday, as you recall, is our Sound the Alarm,” Ecklund told City Council members Monday. “We are still in need of volunteers to install smoke alarms … anyone who can give us a few hours. It’s an 8:30 start at Fletcher Elementary School. The more hands, the less it takes, but it’s planned to install more than 350 smoke detectors. Last I knew they were in 90% or better of the homes that had signed up so we’re really just looking for people to come and install a few smoke alarms. If you can give us an hour or two we’d appreciate it.”

Sound the Alarm is designed to make frontline communities and families safer by offering installation of up to four, free smoke alarms in homes that may be lacking them and providing fire safety education and family escape plans for residents of those homes.

The Western New York Regional Red Cross has selected Jamestown as the Signature City for this year’s Sound the Alarm initiative due to the high number of house fires each year. Red Cross officials are overseeing volunteer registration, so Ecklund said the city won’t know how many people have volunteered until Saturday. Those willing to volunteer can sign up at www.Soundthealarm.org/wny.

“We’ve reached out to everybody,” Ecklund said. “We’ve reached out to the labor unions, electricians, Cummins, service organizations. We are only getting feedback from the REd Cross – which by the way played a very instrumental role in the fire last week housing multiple people and providing food and services. We’ve only gotten feedback from them about what level we’re at. I don’t know if those places have signed up personally.”.
