Jamestown Airport To Host Eclipse Activities

The Chautauqua County-Jamestown Airport will host two days’ worth of events as part of the upcoming solar eclipse.

Locals and visitors alike are invited to immerse themselves in the midday darkness and witness the eclipse spectacle, beginning around 3:15 p.m. locally April 8.

The airport will host a “Fly-by Night” pancake breakfast starting at 7 a.m. April 7 and again at 7 a.m. April 8. In addition to breakfast there will be activities and vendors.

“The eclipse viewing party promises not only a unique spectacle in the sky but also a vibrant atmosphere filled with aviation enthusiasts, diverse vendors, and exciting activities,” said Shannon Fischer, county airports manager. “Our airport is ready to soar with excitement as we anticipate the influx of visitors who will undoubtedly make this event a truly unforgettable experience.”

There will also be a disc jockey, food trucks and rides by, the Great Lakes Flight Center will be offering rides to experience the eclipse from the sky.

“We have our five aircraft available for pilots to rent to be able to watch the eclipse from the air,” said Dave Hinz, president and flight instructor at Great Lakes Flight Center. “Currently we have one of our aircraft already reserved for a private rental and we’ll also be taking a group of students/pilots from our flight school up in another of our aircraft to view the eclipse from altitude.”

With Chautauqua County situated in the eclipse’s path of totality, expect a sky adorned with numerous aircraft arrivals, creating a dynamic and memorable experience for aviation enthusiasts.

“We’re thrilled to showcase the beauty of Chautauqua County-Jamestown Airport as a prime destination for the 2024 Solar Eclipse,” said County Executive Paul M. Wendel Jr. “Welcoming visitors from near and far, our airport promises an unforgettable celebration of aviation, entertainment, and the wonders of the cosmos. We invite everyone to join us and make lasting memories under the Chautauqua County sky.”

On Sunday at 10 a.m., a special dedication ceremony will honor Joseph Minarovich, a stalwart in aviation whose legacy continues to inspire younger generations. The ceremony will pay homage to his enduring commitment and passion for aviation, symbolizing a fitting tribute during this celestial event.
