Park Waterfront Improvement Project Receives Funding

LAKEWOOD – Village Trustees heard an update Monday about the Richard O. Hartley Park Waterfront Revitalization and Improvement Project.
Recently, the village was awarded a $30,000 grant through the Chautauqua County Partnership for Economic Growth (CCPEG). The funding will be used to support economic development projects that focus on revitalization and long-term strategic investment throughout Chautauqua County, consistent with the county's economic development strategic plan, according to CCPEG.
The partnership said that other projects received funding as well, but Lakewood's project received the largest amount of the $242,000 that was awarded to the county.
"We were very fortunate to be awarded the grant for the Hartley shoreline improvement project from the county," Lakewood Community Development Corporation Vice President Ted McCague told trustees. "This is a great opportunity for us (Lakewood) to be able to launch some plans for our Hartley Park shoreline."
McAgue said the money will be used to update the shoreline and other landscaping possibilities. McCague also said that the new playground will be tied in with the existing beach which will help Chautauqua Lake. The playground opened in October 2023.
Funding for the county projects comes from a variety of sources, including Chautauqua County ARPA funding and funding from a multi-year grant from the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation. The next round of CCPEG Support for Economic Development Projects will open in the fall of 2024.
Projects were selected based on a number of criteria including, readiness, economic impact, leverage potential, geographic distribution, alignment with the economic development strategic plan, and based on input from CCPEG's public-private Advisory Board.
In other business, the board held its annual organizational meeting. Mayor Randy Holcomb made appointments for 2024 including several committees. Appointed to the auditing committee were Trustee Nancy Jones, and Trustee Ellen Barnes. Appointed to the finance committee were Trustee Richard Fischer and Trustee Ben Troche. Appointed to the streets and sidewalk committee were Jones and Troche. Appointed to the public safety committee were Troche and Barnes. Appointed to the parks and recreation committee were Barnes and Fischer. Appointed to the personnel committee were Fischer and Troche. Appointed to the zoning committee were Barnes and Jones, and appointed to the grants committee were Troche and Fischer.
Troche was appointed deputy mayor. Gary Segrue, Louis Drago Jr., William Chandler, John Jablonski, Jack McCray, and Martin Idzik will serve on the village zoning board of appeals/planning board.
The board also approved Marilyn Fiore-Lehman as the new village attorney. Her retainer is $18,000.
Re-elected officials also were sworn in at Monday's meeting including Holcomb, Barnes, and Fischer.
