Allegheny National Forest Fire Now Fully Contained
Federal officials have announced 100% containment over the 62-acre fire that broke out on the Allegheny National Forest near Sugar Bay on Monday night.
“Suppression efforts by Allegheny National Forest staff on November 8 were highly effective,” ANF Public Affairs Officer Christopher Leeser said.
“The Glade Volunteer Fire Department and the US Army Corps of Engineers provided transportation to the fire by boat, greatly enhancing the efficiency of the operation,” he explained. “Given the weather forecast, fire activity is projected to remain minimal.
“Wildland firefighters will continue to monitor the area over the next few days.”
Officials still ask the public to stay away from the burned area. Access to the fire by land requires a hike of nearly four miles.
“Fire-weakened trees are a potential safety hazard in the burned area,” Leeser said.
The cause of the fire “remains under investigation,” he added.
The state DCNR Bureau of Forestry is leading that investigation.
