City Council To Begin Budget Talks

Jamestown City Council members will begin their review of Mayor Eddie Sundquist’s 2024 budget proposal tonight.

Budget presentations for the clerk and treasurer, assessor, comptroller, information services and corporation counsel will take place at 6:30 p.m. today in the police training room. Sundquist’s $40.15 million proposed 2024 budget is a 3.3% spending increase compared with the $38,850,000 adopted by the City Council for 2023. The proposed tax levy of $16,380,000 is $210,000 more than the 2023 budget. The proposed 2024 tax rate remains the same as the last four years at $23.69 per $1,000 of assessed valuation.

Following the budget presentations, the council will hold a full work session at 7:30 p.m. in the police training room. Among items on the agenda replacement of the roof at Fire Station 5, 195 Fairmount Avenue, at a cost of $226,793. The city’s share of the work is $90,000, with city officials asking the council to approve spending the money from the contingency account.

In March the roof at Station 5 partially collapsed due to excessive flooding on the roof deck. Since then fire department staff have worked with city Public Works officials and insurance representatives to figure out how best to repair the damage. The city has received a $140,604.82 insurance settlement from Tokio Marine HCC that will be used to pay part of the cost.
