Updated Action Plan Outlines Community Goals For Bemus Point

BEMUS POINT — Projects and goals to benefit the village, both short- and long-term, have been identified as part of an updated action plan.

Several possibilities were discussed by members of the Strategic Plan Oversight Committee during a recent meeting of the Bemus Point Village Board.

Kim Walters, chairwoman of the committee, outlined three priority projects out of about 30 that were backed by the public during an input session held at the Lawson Center. They include: ensuring that public properties — the village beach, boat launch, village park and school yard — are well-maintained; installing or developing a public restroom for visitors to Bemus Point; and updating the current zoning code.

Walters read the committee’s mission statement: “To guide, encourage and facilitate the values and actions listed within the strategic plan; evaluate action items and make recommendations to the village board; conduct outreach to the community and village board as to inform what actions are being considered; partner with the community, other boards and the village board to engage new people and voices to facilitate the action plan goals.”

Walters said the priority rankings have been discussed within the committee; various short- and long-term “actions” were later identified that the committee believes can be accomplished in the community.

“The committee would like to move forward with the advice and direction of the village board and other partners,” Walters said. “With that in mind, during the committee’s next meeting we will be discussing your input from this meeting and forming a list of potential boards that we can connect with to facilitate some of the goals listed. Also, we will invite identified key members to discuss their goals and how they line up with the action plan.”

Mayor Jeff Molnar thanked the group for its work. “They have done everything I’ve charged them to do,” he said. “Thanks for bringing the information to us and bringing all the stakeholders together.”

Bemus Point’s most recent strategic action plan, which is still available on the village’s website, was completed about a decade ago.

Regarding the zoning code, Molnar said the village received a grant to help with an overhaul.

Other short-term projects and goals outlined by the Strategic Plan Oversight Committee include better signage for parking and a review for additional parking options during the “peak season” when the village sees an influx of tourists; an information kiosk in the business district to better direct visitors around Bemus Point; provide a community calendar of events on the village’s website.

Additional long-term goals include establishing design guidelines for commercial districts and for new and existing developments to support lakeside character; develop Lakeside Drive and other areas of the village for walking and biking trails; investing in pedestrian amenities; and connecting “prime residential areas, key attractions and municipal services.”

The committee, which began its work this past April, worked with Don McCord to develop the latest strategic action plan. “He was excellent, and we couldn’t have gone this far without him,” Walters said.

At least two projects not tied to the action plan already have helped beautify Bemus Point. At their recent meeting, village board members praised Peter Conley III and Jacob Wozniak and their Eagle Scout projects.

Wozniak helped create 20 double-sided banners featuring 39 veterans of the Bemus Point area. The banners have been well-received by the community, Molnar said, and most likely will result in additional banners featuring more veterans in the future.

Conley constructed pressure-treated flower boxes that were installed at different locations at Bemus Point Village Park and Lakeside Drive near Chautauqua Lake. Colorful flowers were then planted in the boxes.

Starting at $3.50/week.
