‘Nice To Be Back’: Washington School Sees Open House Success

Several hundred students, parents, teachers and non-profit organizations participated in Washington Middle School’s 2023 Open House program on Tuesday. A variety of non-profit organizations set up table displays in the middle school’s cafeteria.

Washington Middle School was overrun on Tuesday — by students, parents, guardians, teachers and a variety of non-profit organizations.

Jamestown Public Schools locations have been holding their open houses over the past week, with Tuesday being Washington’s turn.

Ericka Alm, Washington Middle School’s new principal after replacing longtime principal Melissa Emerson, shared goals for the year and highlighted some of the offerings at this year’s open house.

“We have several agencies here who are sharing the various programs and services they offer,” said Alm. “I really want to get to know the students and family members, and make sure that this school is warm and welcoming for all students…that this is someplace they really want to come to and that they (students) look forward to coming to.”

Additionally, some of Washington’s teachers echoed Alm’s sentiments.

“It’s so nice to be back and see the school filled with students,” added Hope Hill, a fifth and sixth grade teacher.

At least one parent noticed an increase in the number of organizations represented at this year’s open house. More than 20 non-profit organizations set up tables.

“I can’t believe how many people are here, it wasn’t this big last year,” said Maria Martinez-Rodriguez, a parent of two Washington students. “It will be soon when my refrigerator will be covered with artwork and report cards again. I’m really impressed with the hard work all the teachers put in this year to make this such a great event.”

“It’s all about the kids,” said Joalexis Martir, a teen and youth worker with the Jamestown Area YMCA. “We stay focused on the kids and meeting their needs.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
