Plans to replace the blacktop at Wheelock School have hit a bump in the road, as the cost of the Capital Outlay Project came in higher than what Young and Wright Architectural initially anticipated for the district.

"There were some increased costs in their estimate to us. … That was unforeseen," said Superintendent Brad Zilliox. "We are currently having a discussion about how we can correct that."

What Zilliox called "the bulk" of the project is related to fortifying the entryways of the building, which will still proceed.

Board Member Lisa Powell Fortna asked if the delay will impact the timeframe for the project to be completed. Business Administrator John Forbes responded, "No, my understanding is that once we agree, we're good to go."

The blacktop replacement portion of the project is expected to be addressed at the next meeting of the Board of Education, July 18.

At the recent meeting, the district also approved services and supplies contracts for art supplies for the school year and for an Emergency Transportation Contract with First Student, Inc.

The district also updated its Code of Conduct, which had not been consistently addressed in recent years, according to Zilliox. The district plans to reevaluate the Code of Conduct each year moving forward.

"As great as our students are and can be, at times, there are things that happen," Zilliox said. "... There are moments where (the Code of Conduct) becomes incredibly important and really guides our decision making."
