Bike Boxes Installed Recently On Washington Street

Green roadways, crosswalks, lane markings/Bike Boxes began to be placed all around the city, Wednesday. Green is designated as a marking color for bike boxes or cyclist lanes.

Around Jamestown are what appears to be green-colored crosswalks, street directional paintings and some odd, green-colored markings.

These green markings are bike boxes. These paintings give cyclists the right-of-way at some intersections and make cyclists more visible to motorists. hopefully preventing vehicle vs. pedestrian accidents, reducing traffic congestion -by advocating for cyclists and walkers- and signifying that this city is bicycle friendly.

When a traffic light is green, an intersection with a bike box works as any typical intersection. Cyclers have to indicate lane changes and turns while drivers turning right yield to cyclists. At a red light drivers have to stop behind the green bike box to allow cyclists to cross. The green box across the road is an area for cyclists to cross into traffic and either proceed straight or turn left onto another road. When the light turns green and cyclists are in the bike box, cyclists are to have priority through the intersection with drivers proceeding or turning after cyclists have moved through the intersection.

Starting at $3.50/week.
