Cemetery Receives Facelift With Eagle Scout Project

Pictured is Xander Pitts, a new Eagle Scout from Frewsburg Boy Scout Troop 133, standing in front of his Eagle Scout Project at Maple Grove Cemetery in Frewsburg.

Maple Grove Cemetery in Frewsburg has received a facelift thanks to Xander Pitts, one of the area’s newest Eagle Scouts.

Only about 4% to 8% of scouts earn the Eagle Scout rank. One of the last requirements for Eagle Scouts is to propose, plan and carry out a community service project.

About a year ago, Pitts was trying to come up with a service idea. He knew that he wanted to help out his Frewsburg community. Jeremy and Amy Edwards, Maple Grove Cemetery caretakers, had an idea in mind that he could help with. The front entrance and memorials were in need of some repair.

Many hours were spent in planning, fundraising and setting up local businesses and community members to donate their time, services and money to help with the project. The area is primarily used for Memorial Day services and has a monument on it honoring those from the community who lost their lives in battles.

The project included removing a dilapidated concrete pad, replacing three flagpoles, the construction of a new concrete pad and meditation bench, as well as landscaping.

Pitts thanks his family, fellow scouts and leaders, Samuel Derby Post American Legion, Jeremy and Amy Edwards, Green Thumb Landscaping, Jimmy Coffin Concrete, JMI, Liquid Lawn Hydroseeding, and the those who donated money to make the project a reality.
