Lakewood Board Hires 6 Lifeguards For Beach

LAKEWOOD -- The Lakewood Village Board of Trustees Monday approved the hiring of six lifeguards for the summer season to work on Lakewood Beach at Richard O. Hartley Park.
Supervisory lifeguard Madeline Dubois will make $16 per hour, while Evelyn Montagna, Caroline Apthorpe, Anthony Wren, Donavin Brown, and Peyton Range will make $14 per hour.
"They did a fantastic job (on their certifications)," Trustee Nancy Jones said.
Recently the board approved the purchase of a new dock for $14,545 from Metallic Ladder Operations, of Randolph. The board also OK'd Monday $2,500 for the installation and the delivery of the dock.
The board was deadlocked on the dock purchase with Mayor Randy Holcomb breaking the tie in favor of purchasing the dock. He did have one addition to the dock resolution.
"I could be in favor of this (purchase) if we add that the dock is sold if it is not used. I don't want parked on the beach for five years. My resolution would be to approve the purchase of a new dock to be placed at the Lakewood Beach at Richard O. Hartley Park, and it would be sold if it is not used," Holcomb previously told the board at its May 8 meeting.
Barnes noted May 8, that the beach belongs to village residents and the new playground at the park will serve as a magnet to attract swimmers to the beach. The board approved the opening date of the beach as June 29. The operating times are scheduled for Wednesdays through Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The L-shaped, 81-foot dock is comprised of six sections with two ladders and space for a lifeguard chair.
Barnes also said at the May 8 meeting that she has received many comments from village residents and non-residents about the beach and how the new playground is a magnet for people. "They like the idea of being able to go down there (to the beach) and go swimming. I think the new playground is constantly now a magnet for people. I think more and more people are going to come down, and it does give people something to do," she said.
In other business:
¯ approved an extension of the retainer for village Attorney John LaMancuso for June 1 through Dec. 31 for $8,750.
¯ approved a special music permit application for the Lakewood Rod and Gun Club, 433 E. Terrace Ave. for outside music performances, for June through August.
¯ approved a special music permit application for Group Ther-Happy, 103 Chautauqua Ave., for outside music performances, for May through October.
