Lakewood Village Board Adopts Spending Plan

LAKEWOOD -- The Lakewood Village Board of Trustees adopted its 2023-2024 budget.
"We have a budget for the 2023-2024 fiscal year," Mayor Randy Holcomb said.
Trustees Monday, approved the total final spending plan is $4,207,743. It's an increase of $77,894 from last year's budget of $4,129,849. The tax rate is $8.05 per $1,000 of assessed value. The prior rate was $8.09. The amount to be raised by taxes is $2,008,951.
Holcomb said previously it is the duty of the mayor to present the budget to the board of trustees, and the budget was filed with Village Clerk Mary Currie on March 20.
"Thank you to all of the department heads that worked with us," Deputy Mayor Ben Troche said.
The board is comprised of Holcomb, Troche, Trustees Rich Fischer, Ellen Barnes, and Nancy Jones.
The fiscal year begins June 1 and ends May 31, 2024, and the board had to adopt its budget by May 1.
In other business, the board:
¯ approved the Lakewood YMCA to use the village streets and Richard O. Hartley Park for the annual Firecracker 10K and 2 mile run on July 4. It begins at 9 a.m.
"Thank you all for allowing us to host this great event. It's a really fun event" said YMCA Vice President of Operations John Barber. He added that is good for the village and for the YMCA.
"We love it. It starts the Fourth of July off right every year," Barnes noted.
¯ approved Fitness in the Park on Mondays and Thursdays at 11 a.m., and begins on June 1 and ends on Aug. 31.
¯ approved rehiring of James Fye as a seasonal parks department employee. Fye will begin work on April 19 and will earn $15.95 per hour.
¯ approved the hiring Hunter Teboe, of Falconer, as a part-time police officer for the Lakewood-Busti Police Department. Teboe will begin on April 17 and will earn $18 per hour. On June 1, his rate will be $19.50 per hour.
¯ approved dock permit applications for Anthony Costanzo, 138 E. Terrace Ave., for the Oakland Avenue right of way; Denise and David Doane, 127 Erie St., for the Lowe Avenue right of way; and Steven Johnson, 26, Harlem Ave., for the Harlem Avenue right of way. The board noted that the Lakewood Volunteer Fire Department will be housing the rescue boat on the dock, and will carry the necessary insurance.
The next meeting will be April 24 at 6:30 p.m.
