Dunkirk Vets Banner Program Eyes Startup

There’s more details out about a Dunkirk initiative to honor local veterans with street banners.

The Dunkirk Hero Banner Program sent a letter about its plans to the city government last week. It “will be ready to launch for applications on January 1st, 2023,” according to the letter.

The program committee “set out to establish a program that honors and memorializes those that have and still are serving for our country. All branches of the military will be included.”

There is a website in the works, www.cityofdunkirkherobannerprogram.com, and it’s supposed to be ready for viewing Dec. 15, the letter states.

“We hope to have 200 banners up throughout our city by Memorial Day, 2023. There are a lot of details still to be accomplished and the committee is agreeably moving forward,” the letter concludes.

The banner program committee was originally set up by city Councilwoman Natalie Luczkowiak and fellow members of the Dunkirk High School Class of 1975.

“I just have a concern where the funding is going to come from,” Councilwoman Nancy Nichols said after the letter was read at the Dec. 6 Common Council meeting.

“We are working on that. We are going to be going after solicitations, but before that… we’re in negotiations with Southpaw Printing who is going to be supplying the banners, along with the brackets,” Luczkowiak replied. “We’ve talked with the DPW. After we advertise, people will realize that if they want to have their loved ones on the banner, there is a certain cost.”

She added, “This is a first run, a first year. … It depends on how many people will reply. The website will say much more.”

The council received and filed the letter, taking no further action on it. The program committee has the blessing of Mayor Wilfred Rosas and his administration and seeks similar approval from the council.

Starting at $3.50/week.
