A city property previously used by The Resource Center as a group home sustained an unknown amount of damage Tuesday after a frozen sprinkler head burst.
Members of the Jamestown Fire Department were called around 2:15 p.m. for a fire alarm activation at 35 Fairmount Ave., located between West and East Hamilton streets in Jamestown.
Upon arrival, Battalion Chief Shawn Shilling said from one side of the building he could see “lots of water” coming from the roof.
After forcing entry inside, firefighters quickly shut off the water to the sprinkler system. An investigation found that a frozen sprinkler head located in the attic had burst, which allowed water to freely spray.
Shilling said the water then flowed downward to the other floors.
Steve Waterson, director of community relations, marketing and development for The Resource Center, said the building had been used as a group home, though it was unoccupied as of July 2021.
“Fortunately, no one was living there at this time,” Waterson said.
Firefighters remained on scene for about an hour. Shilling said crews removed as much of the water as possible from the attic while TRC representatives were called to have the building’s utilities secured.
Waterson thanked the firefighters for their work Tuesday. He said TRC had plans to reopen the group home, and it’s unclear if those plans might be impacted by the burst sprinkler head.
Since Friday, when cold air moved into Western New York, Shilling said city firefighters have handled four or five burst water pipes.
