An educator known for his often humorous videos on YouTube is coming to the Reg Lenna Center For The Arts.
The event, titled “An Evening with Gerry Brooks,” will be hosted by Collaborative Children’s Solutions. Brooks will be speaking Saturday, Sept. 10, and the talk will take place at 7 p.m.
On his popular YouTube channel, Brooks deals with education by using humor, according to event organizer Patrick Smeraldo.
“He is a principal in Lexington, Kentucky,” Smeraldo said. “The main focus of his videos is positive culture in a school environment. A lot of his videos are of fake phone calls of parents complaining and he answers them with humor. I found out about him because my wife and I are both teachers in Jamestown. He is a cult figure in education and teaching, and he speaks around the country.”
Following his theme, Brook’s talk on Sept. 10 will be focused on school and education in a positive culture. This addresses both staff and students at schools.
“If teachers and staff are happy to come to work and work together as a team this can have a huge benefit on students,” Smeraldo said. “These days, I think most school environments could use a positive culture.”
Smeraldo said he hopes the event will attract not just local people but people from Buffalo, Erie, Pa., and Rochester. He added that Brooks is a motivational speaker for educators, which is something that can be very important these days.
“I see it as a kickoff event for the school year to get the year off to a good start now that we’re even more back to normal, and to start the school year in a positive environment,” Smeraldo said.
According to Smeraldo, part of the mission of Collaborative Children’s Solutions is to attract professionals from across the country to help development training for educators. Previously they have had speaker Chris Haron, who speaks about substance abuse. They have been working to attract national talent to the area.
“As a teacher I’m excited for Brooks to come because I want to help work towards positive environments in schools,” Smeraldo said. “If the staff is stressed or having a stressful time it can stress the overall school environment. Support for educators is important and we can offer them help to be able to help the kids as is our educational responsibility. This event supports our education and our city.”
Smeraldo encouraged anyone involved in education to come hear Brooks.
“Anybody with an earshot of education should come,” Smeraldo said. “Any work environment should have a positive culture. I would encourage anyone who wants to work towards positive environments in schools to come out.”
Tickets for the event are $28 and are available at the Reg Lenna box office.
