Building Work Ongoing At Panama Central

PANAMA — Maintenance work as part of a larger building project that began last year is continuing at Panama Central School.

“This is an extension of last year’s project,” Superintendent Bert Lictus said. “Last year we did a building project and we built some new rooms, and fixed the tennis court, things like that. We had money left over from that, which we are now using for this.”

The current project includes the renovation of a playground, a few office changes, and fixing some door knobs, Lictus said.

“It’s small maintenance work, really,” he said.

Another change the school district is looking into follows a discussion between Lictus and the Board of Education, when they looked into extending the pre-kindergarten program from a half day into a full day.

“We will not be doing that yet,” Lictus said. “We were waiting on some information and were unclear on some areas of funding and if we would be able to afford it. At the moment we will continue as we are.”

The extension of the day for the pre-kindergarten program would include the need for teachers and classrooms. Lictus said over the course of the next year the board will be looking into the advantages and disadvantages of the idea and whether it would be something that could happen next summer.

“It was too rushed to be able to do it this summer,” Lictus said.
