The purchase of a parking lot equalling two and a half parcels of land near Jamestown High School will be on the ballot in May after the Jamestown Public Schools Board voted to approve the measure Tuesday.
The lots on Chandler Street, located between Jamestown High School and First Lutheran Church, were approved as necessary for the school to purchase at $225,000.
Superintendent Kevin Whitaker said part of the parking lot, owned by the church, is currently used by students and staff.
“In order to continue that relationship and to continue to be able to use that property, we wanted to make sure that we own that property,” Whitaker said. “Also, of course, it’s a help to the church’s maintenance and with any of their needs that they have in terms of updating their facilities. It’s mutually beneficial.”
Three measures regarding the potential purchase were voted upon: one to specify the detail of necessity for the property acquisition; a resolution to authorize the acquisition to make a proposition for the public vote in May; and one explaining the school district intends to continue using the parking areas, small lawn areas and sidewalks with little to no modifications.
The annual district meeting and the vote on the budget will take place May 17.
