Serving in the 57th state Senate district since 2019, George Borrello announced Tuesday he will be seeking re-election to the state Legislature in the newly configured 58th state Senate district.

The newly configured 58th district, created as a result of redistricting, encompasses Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Allegany and Wyoming counties, as well as a portion of Erie County. The 57th district included all of Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and Allegany counties, as well as parts of Livingston County.

“I am grateful every day for the privilege of serving the people of the Western Southern Tier,” Borrello stated in a news release. “This region is my home and there is nothing more important than ensuring its future. I feel fortunate that the 58th district will include most of the 57th, with the addition of Wyoming County and a southern portion of Erie County.”

Borrello. R-Sunset Bay, said since winning a special election in November 2019 to fill the remaining year of former state Sen. Cathy Young’s two-year term, the challenges facing New York have been unprecedented.

“From the public health concerns and economic upheaval related to the COVID-19 pandemic to the multiple scandals and eventual resignation of our former Gov. (Andrew Cuomo) to the harmful pro-criminal agenda and economic consequences of radical special interest-driven policies, New York state is a cautionary tale of what can happen when there are no checks and balances in state government,” he said. “As we approach a crucial election year, the stakes for New York have never been higher.”

Borrello said the stakes are high because of laws like the “disastrous” bail reform and other legislation advocated by Downstate lawmakers.

“It is also important that I continue my efforts to advocate for lower taxes and policies that will reverse our outmigration of residents to protect our family farms and their ability to remain viable and compete to support our small businesses and to bring common sense to our renewable energy policies,” he said. “Among the achievements I am most proud of is the enactment of Nourish NY into a permanent program. The benefits to our farmers and food-insecure New Yorkers will be incalculable in the years ahead.”

I am also encouraged at the progress we’ve made on the issue of rural broadband access, advocating for small businesses, and securing our fair share of state resources.”

Borrello said his core mission remains to provide the highest level of constituent service.

“In three short years, a strong foundation has been built and a lot has been accomplished,” he said. “However, there is still important work to be done and battles to be won on behalf of the hardworking, law-abiding people of our region and across the state. I look forward to sharing that message and my agenda for change with voters in the coming months.”

Before being elected to the state Senate, Borrello was Chautauqua County executive for almost two years and a Chautauqua County legislator for seven years.
