Library Board Greets New Members, Says Goodbye To Four

More than a third of the James Prendergast Library Board of Trustees will be new to the job next year.

On Thursday, the board approved two new members — Judith Long and Abbey Soffel — to go along with two new members approved last month – Jessica Carr and Elizabeth Margarito — who will all be starting their first year as a trustee in January.

Since September, the board’s Nominating Committee — chaired by Lynn Warner — has been searching for four new trustees because the terms of four curent members will expire at the end of the year. Board members who are leaving the board include Micki McCray, Warner, Maggie Scorse and Lori Fabritius. Some of the departing members of the board have to leave the post because of the library’s by-laws, which state that no one can serve more than three consecutive three-year terms, for a total of nine straight years.

“It’s been a great experience,” Warner said. “I can’t believe it has been nine years.”

McCray added, “I feel very good leaving at this point. I feel we have a good board and a great director (Annie Greene).”

Warner said all four new members live in Jamestown, which is important because of the change in residency requirement the board made last year. The library’s by-laws state that two-thirds of the board members have to be residents of Jamestown.

During the board meeting, the members also approved their officers for next year, with Dan Hickman remaining as president; Ned Lindstrom returning as vice president; Michael Corey continuing as treasurer; and Cassie Blakeslee being elected secretary.

Starting at $3.50/week.
