An Arizona man traveling the country with his basset hound isn’t letting a minor speed bump slow him down — and he has the Jamestown Police Department to thank for that.

Wayne Brauchler was inside Tim Hortons in Jamestown Friday morning when his bike and sidecar were stolen. Brauchler, a retired firefighter of 24 years from the Chicago area, was in town visiting on what has been a months-long trek to different parts of the country with his dog, Copper.

Just recently the pair visited the Baseball Hall of Fame and Niagara Falls.

While in Jamestown he stopped by the Lucille Ball Desi Arnaz Museum and the National Comedy Center.

However, after stopping to get some coffee early Friday morning, a crucial element to his adventure had been taken. He called the Jamestown Police Department, who checked surveillance video and began a search for the bike and sidecar.

Brauchler called the items “priceless” and assumed they were likely lost for good.

However, by 9:30 a.m. he received word that the bike and sidecar had been recovered by the railroad tracks. “The officers’ knowledge of where cameras are located in the area led to a quick recovery of the sidecar,” Chief Timothy Jackson said.

Brauchler, who did not press charges, praised the Jamestown officers including Adam Deuble and Jake Swan for their effort.

“I’m so proud of these guys,” Brauchler told The Post-Journal after stopping by to recount the morning’s events. “If they work this hard in helping me with this, then I can only imagine when there’s bigger stuff going on.”
