More COVID Vaccination Clinics Popping Up

When one clinic closes, another opens.

Proof that COVID-19 vaccinations are becoming more readily available can be seen in the multiple clinics popping up regularly throughout Chautauqua County. While one such clinic, taking place today at Jamestown Community College, filled by Wednesday, another was announced — this time Friday at UPMC Chautauqua.

Those are in addition to clinics held earlier this week at the State University of New York at Fredonia and Wednesday in Irving.

About 300 doses were being made available at UPMC Chautauqua’s clinic. Registration can be found at: https://apps2.health.ny.gov/doh2/applinks/cdmspr/2/counties?OpID=B9996975FDDC04BCE0530A6C7C166199

According to the state’s vaccine tracker, 43,178 residents within the county have been administered at least one dose — representing 33.7% of the total population — while 25,757 have completed their vaccination series as of Wednesday. In Cattaraugus County, 21,537 have received one dose while 14,104 have completed their series.

Chautauqua County continues to match its vaccination rate with the statewide figure: 34.4%, while Cattaraugus County lags at 28%.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the state is increasing its testing, vaccination efforts and “making sure vaccines are available, free and equitable.” On Tuesday, those eligible to get a vaccine expanded to anyone over 16 years of age.

“Our ongoing goals are getting the supply from Washington, having the distribution network and then convincing New Yorkers of the need to roll up their sleeves and get vaccinated,” Cuomo said.

County Executive PJ Wendel noted similar plans locally. In an interview this week, Wendel said efforts on the county level will eventually shift to trying to get doses to those not originally planning on getting a shot.

“At that point it’s going to be a matter of convincing people to get the vaccine,” the county executive said.

In related news, the county Health Department reported 22 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday. There are currently 158 active cases, three people with the virus in the hospital, 418 in quarantine and a seven-day positivity rate of 1.7%. To date there have been 8,395 total cases, 8,095 recoveries and 142 virus-related death.
