CHAUTAUQUA -- Chautauqua Institution will be providing water for a new housing project in the town.
During the Chautauqua Town Board meeting this weel, board members unanimously approved creating the Mandolin Ridge water district.
Mandolin Ridge is a 54 lot subdivision located near the intersection of Chautauqua Stedman Road and Route 394 in the town of Chautauqua. H&H Chautauqua Development LLC is the owner of the project and Mayshark Builders Inc. of Mayville is the developer.
According to Andy Johnson with Eco Strategies, the water for the housing development will be coming from the Chautauqua Utility District, which is the water supplier from Chautauqua Institution. "It's really a win-win on a lot of levels - not only for the development itself but also they are having water problems in other parts of the town," he said.
By having public water come out of the Institution, there will be opportunities for nearby residents to explore joining the district if their wells are bad.
"They (Institution) have plenty of capacity. They can do a million gallons a day if they had to. The most they ever do is half that during the absolute peak season. They're normally like 200,000 to 300,000 (gallons) a day so they're happy to have us as a customer," said Johnson. "The Institution has the capacity because they're pulling from the lake."
Now that the water district is approved, Johnson said they will get the permits from the health department and hope to start construction of the water lines later this month. The project should be finished in the next six to eight months. "We hope to have most of the entire development done by the fall, which includes the road. ... We've already done the storm water infrastructure. Now we're going to be doing water, sewer and then electric and gas will come later," he said.
