City Allocates CARES Act Funds To More Businesses

An additional $157,000 in CARES Act funding has been allocated to more city businesses.

The additional funding went to The Beer Snob; Big Pitts BBQ; The Biodome Project; Brindle Barn; Colecraft; Garden of Eden; It’s Your Day; Jamestown Awning and Party Tents; Jamestown Skate Products; John David Salon; and La Cucina Della Nonna.

“Applications from businesses that received assistance were put through a review process and assigned points based on the type of business, economic injury, number of employees, status of operations and years in operation,” said Crystal Surdyk, city development director. “All businesses were required to provide proof of economic impact due to the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Businesses have been able to apply for grants of up to $20,000 for the purposes of reopening and recovering from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This was the second round of funding the city received from the federal government to assist local businesses. To date, 38 business have been awarded a total of $685,700 in CARES Act assistance.

Surdyk said she doesn’t know if there will be a third round of CARES Act funding in the city’s future.

“I’m really hoping so,” she said about the possibility of more federal funding this year. “We don’t know for certain, yet. We haven’t heard anything from the federal government at this point. We’re crossing our figures hoping there will be.”

The funding is provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development through the allocation of a federal Community Development Block Grant. The total amount of CARES Act funding awarded locally is now $857,000. This total also includes a rental assistance program totaling $71,000 and $100,000 for the Jamestown Board of Public Utilities to help assist residents struggling to pay their utility bills.

Surdyk said she didn’t know the exact number of people who have applied for the BPU utility assistance program.

“The applications are still being processes. We’re still accepting applications,” she said. “We worked with the BPU on the criteria for the program. Those eligible are receiving notices in the mail from the BPU. Also, people can apply online (www.jamestownny.gov or www.jamestownbpu.com) or get an application from our office.”

In October, city officials announced receiving an additional $302,569 in CARES Act funding. During the second phase of CARES Act funding, $45,385 was allocated toward administration costs.

The city received $704,811 in the first allocation of CARES Act funding. Of the $704,811 in funding, $600,000 was allocated to two programs, one to assist local businesses and one to help renters. The other $104,811 went toward administration costs.

During the first allocation, renters in the city were allowed to apply for $1,500 in assistance. In August, Surdyk told the Jamestown City Council at least 28 renters received assistance.
