Chautauqua Institution officials are planning to hold in-person events next summer.

In a video sent to Chautauqua Institution members, Michael Hill, institution president, said some dates have already been scheduled. More information will be released once plans to comply with federal and state regulations have been reviewed by the Chautauqua Institution Board of Trustees in November.

“While we’re still in the process of planning the 2020-21 Summer Assembly, what I can tell you is we’re planning to host programming on the grounds next summer in addition to presenting programs online at CHQ Assembly as we did this summer,” Hill said. “Our plan will prioritize both health and safety and be flexible to respond to changing state and federal regulations related to the pandemic. We’re preparing to review these plans with the Board of Trustees at its November meeting after which we’ll host a webinar to share more details, including when you can expect to receive additional program updates and information about pricing, gate passes and single ticket sales.”

Hill said those interested on the upcoming season can visit 2021.chq.org for more information. Confirmed programs include a concert by Michael W. Smith, a contemporary Christian singer, on July 2, Wynonna & The Big Noise, featuring Wynonna Judd, on July 16, and Jay Leno on July 23. Themes for the nine-week season have also been finalized, though speakers haven’t been announced yet.

Hill thanked donors and supporters who have given more in recognition that many of the institution’s funding streams saw significant decreases due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That additional funding helped the institution develop new ways to deliver programs, like the online CHQ Assembly.

“Thank you for your generosity and for your untiring commitment to our mission to explore the very best in human values and the enrichment of life,” Hill said.

Starting Wednesday, Chautauqua Institution will host the JLCO Septet with Wynton Marsalis for a 10-day residency focused on improvisation, blues and swing. The ensemble’s performances will take place at Elizabeth S. Lenna Hall for streaming at a later date on the CHQ Assembly Video Platform, but the performances will be viewable live by attendees of six special jazz-themed dinners and brunches. Additionally, Marsalis will present three live conversations on the CHQ Assembly Virtual Porch and JLCO musicians and leaders will present a series of courses on jazz classics and culture via the CHQ Assembly Classroom.
