Audubon Sets Magical Opportunities

Audubon Community Nature Center is adding some magic to the fall of 2020 with make-n-take workshops for ages 7 and older. Dragon eggs like the ones pictured are one of the possibilities through Oct. 17. Children can even go on a hunt for dragon eggs at the Dragons and Fairies Activity Day on Saturday, Sept. 19.

Through mid-October, the Audubon Community Nature Center is adding dragons and fairies to the magic of nature it offers year-round.

At Dragons and Fairies Activity Day, Saturday, Sept. 19, children can be part of a dragon egg hunt, make a fairy crown or wizard wand, do an enchanted scavenger hunt, try the kid-friendly archery range, and more.

Choose a time between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. for an hour-long exploration, creation, and imagination session through a series of activity stations. Pick a project to do, a hunt in which to participate and a costume element to make. There are free options and ones that require an extra fee.

There are opportunities for photos with props and additions as weather allows. Those attending can also hike the Enchanted Trail to look for fairy houses or gnome villages.

Admission is $8 for adults, $6 for Nature Center members and children ages 3-15; 2 and under are free. Fee activities accept tickets that can be purchased at the check-in table.

Space is limited. Reservations times are every 45 minutes, and paid reservations are due by noon, Friday, Sept. 18. To register, call the Nature Center during open hours at 569-2345 or go to AudubonCNC.org/Programs and click on “Current Schedule.”

For more in-depth fairy fun, adults and children ages 7 and up can experience magical “Wonder-Filled Wednesdays” workshops through Oct. 14 (plus Saturday, Oct. 17). Go to AudubonCNC.org/Programs and click on “Current Schedule” to sign up to make-n-take Fairy Houses, Enchanted Doorways, Fairy Lanterns, Leaf Masks, or Dragon Eggs.

Directions, examples, and all necessary materials are provided. Those attending are encouraged to bring additional decorations or supplies to enhance your creation.

Audubon’s COVID-19 safety precautions require face coverings for all visitors ages 3 and up for indoor programs. They are also required outdoors when visitors cannot maintain six feet of distance between family groups.

Dragons and Fairies Activity Day and “Wonder-filled Wednesdays” are sponsored by Slone Melhuish.

Audubon Community Nature Center is located at 1600 Riverside Road, one-quarter mile east of Route 62 between Jamestown and Warren. While the Nature Center building is not open for walk-in visitors just yet, you are welcome to visit the 600-acre nature preserve from dawn to dusk daily. Enjoy the native tree arboretum, gardens, picnic area, and six miles of trails, and view Liberty, Audubon’s non-releasable Bald Eagle, while practicing safe social distancing measures.
