Man Who Wiped Head On Officer Charged

LAKEWOOD — A Jamestown man who reportedly stole a backpack from Walmart is also facing charges he intentionally wiped his forehead on an officer’s arm.

The incident took place Saturday around 3:50 p.m. after members of the Lakewood-Busti Police Department were summoned to Walmart in Lakewood for a report of a person leaving the store without paying for a backpack.

The person was located a short time later and identified as Shawn M. Garrett, 38, of Baker Street, Jamestown.

Garrett was transported back to the store for processing, and it was learned that he had been issued a trespass warning in the past, making the incident a burglary.

While in custody, Garrett allegedly “wiped his sweaty forehead on an officer’s bare arm.”

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the city man was charged with third-degree menacing. Garrett was transported to Chautauqua County Jail for centralized arraignment. He faces additional charges of third-degree burglary, petit larceny and criminal possession of a hypodermic needle.
