End Of School Year Dates Announced

School officials across Chautauqua County have begun announcing their last days of instruction for the year.

Since March, schools have turned to distance learning amid the coronavirus pandemic — altering how teachers interact with students and impacting a host of activities including prom and graduation.

Southwestern Central School this week said its last day of remote instruction for the 2019-20 school year will be Monday, June 15. Officials said each school building will be making final plans for the delivery and pick up of instructional materials and technology. In addition, the last day for meal delivery will be Friday, June 26.

In Jamestown, the last day of instruction within the Jamestown Public Schools District will be Wednesday, June 10, except Ring Elementary School, which had to close for a day in February due to cleaning from a broken drainpipe. Ring Elementary School’s last day of school will be Thursday, June 11.

Each school principal will notify students and families about end of year close out procedures including the return of school property such as textbooks, calculators, library books, novels and athletic uniforms. Principals will also share information about procedures to collect students’ belongings in lockers or classrooms.

Those with questions on school closure procedures are asked to contact their school principal for more information.

“It’s important to me that we wrap this year up,” said Dr. Bret Apthorpe, district superintendent, in a Facebook Live session Friday. “I’ve been meeting with my leadership team and we’re just triple-checking our calculations because you have to have that 180 days of instruction.”

At Frewsburg Central School, the last day of instruction for all students will be Friday, June 12.

The Fredonia Central School District said its last day would be Monday, June 8. Teacher and support staff will be available through the district’s new communication channels through Wednesday, June 10.

At Chautauqua Lake Central School, the last day for instruction will be Monday, June 8.

The Salamanca City Central School District stated that Friday, June 12, would be the last day of the school year. Principals at each of the district’s three schools will share direction in the coming weeks on how students can collect their materials and devices left at school. They will also share plans for virtual send-off celebrations for students and staff to bring closure to the school year.

“We will work together as a district to properly celebrate the accomplishments of our students, staff and community,” said Robert Breidenstein, district superintendent. “The past few months demonstrate the true Warrior Spirit.”
