Pair Face Charges After Chase

Two city residents are facing numerous charges following a pursuit involving a reported stolen vehicle that ended in a crash late Saturday.

Jamestown police took Eric R. VanGiesen, 34, and Christopher J. Hewitt, 48, into custody after spotting a 2007 Chevy Silverado reported stolen out of Salamanca.

“Officers attempted to make a traffic stop on the vehicle when the operator failed to comply and accelerated in an attempt to elude officers,” the Jamestown Police Department said in a news release. “Multiple traffic infractions were observed as the vehicle continued to travel throughout the city including traveling the wrong way down one-way streets multiple times almost striking several vehicles.

The pickup was seen traveling north on Liberty Street toward Falconer Street when it struck an unoccupied vehicle.

The driver, identified as VanGiesen, attempted to flee but was taken into custody, as was a passenger, identified as Hewitt.

In the truck police found 17 grams of concentrated cannabis.

VanGiesen was charged with third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, driving while ability impaired by drugs, fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest, first-degree reckless endangerment and third-degree unlawfully fleeing a police officer.

Hewitt was charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Both were arraigned and released with tickets to appear in Jamestown City Court later.
