School Bus Drivers’ Records May Be Public

A state lawmaker wants to allow parents curious about the driving history of school bus drivers may be able to view such information.

State Sen. Patty Ritchie, R-Watertown, has introduced S.7278 to make available upon request by parents or guardians the records of all traffic violations by school bus drivers. The law would provide bus drivers’ driving records of both school buses and private vehicles.

“While New York state has an excellent school bus safety record and significant safety measures have been enacted, it is imperative that we give families every tool available so that they can be assured that the nearly 2.3 million students who are transported by school bus drivers who log over 400 million miles each year, are safe,” Ritchie wrote in her legislative justification. “While most drivers do an excellent job under often difficult situations, parents and guardians deserve to have access to the information necessary to confirm that their young family members are being transported by safe and responsible drivers.”

Similar legislation has not been proposed in the past. Ritchie wrote that there are no financial implications to state and local governments, though the legislation does not say how school districts would obtain the bus drivers’ driving records or who would pay for records request fees, if there are any.
