All public parks inside the village of Lakewood will now be designated smoke- and tobacco-free zones.

The village board unanimously passed a resolution recently after listening to presentations from Chautauqua County Health Department Healthy Communities Consultant Lisa Schmidtfrerick-Miller and Ken Dahlgren of Tobacco-Free for Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and Allegany counties.

“We made a resolution to have our village attorney draft a policy that designates all village parks as nonsmoking and tobacco-free facilities,” said Mayor Randy Holcomb.

Holcomb was pleased that the measure will ensure use of parks in the village without public concern for secondhand smoke. The village has been provided with signage to enforce the change free of charge through nonsmoking organizations.

That will not be the only change that Richard O. Hartley Park sees in the future.

On Monday, the board will hear a presentation from the Lakewood Community Development Corporation about proposed improvements to the Hartley playground.

In other business, the board recently authorized Lakewood-Busti Police Chief John Bentley to request sealed bids for two new marked police cars.

“The folks bidding will call the police department and ask for their (specifications). They will put together their bids and seal them, submit them to the village,” Holcomb said. “The need comes from conversations with Police Chief Bentley about the huge number of miles added up on police cars. Every year it depreciates the value of the car and the car itself.”

At the approval of the board, Treasurer Apryl Troutman will attend a Introduction of Governmental Accounting Training course in Batavia on March 18-20.

The board also approved dock permit applications for two structures, located on the right-of-ways on Pleasantville Avenue and Glenwood Avenue Holcomb wished to remind residents to get their dock permits in to the village office as soon as possible.
