New District 10 Legislator Nomination Expected Soon

MAYVILLE — The new legislator for District 10 could be approved later this month.

On Tuesday, PJ Wendel, county executive, told The Post-Journal that a nominee should be named by the time the Chautauqua County Legislature holds its next monthly voting session meeting.

Wendel was approved by the legislature to be the new county executive earlier this month, following the recommendation of the Chautauqua County Republican Party Committee. Wendel had served as the legislature’s representative for District 10, which covers parts of Jamestown, Busti, Kiantone and Lakewood.

Wendel said a couple potential nominations have contacted him about the vacant position. Wendel, who is the town of Busti Republican Party Committee chairman, said Randy Holcomb, Lakewood mayor and town of Busti Republican Party Committee vice chairman, is handling the search process.

Wendel said he expects a nomination for the vacant District 10 seat will be made by the next time the county Legislature meets at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, on the third floor of the Gerace Office Building in Mayville.

“(Holcomb has) been meeting with the town of Busti and city of Jamestown. (Holcomb) is hoping to have a name forwarded to the county Legislature by the next meeting,” Wendel said.

Wendel, a Republican, was first elected to the county Legislature in 2012. He has been chairman of the legislature for the past two years. He previously chaired the legislature Public Safety Committee. He has also been a member of the Administrative Services and Audit and Control committees.

Following the November election victory by former County Executive George Borrello to fill the vacancy in the 57th State Senate District, Wendel was recommended last month to be the next county executive by the Chautauqua County Republican Party Committee.

The legislature approved the recommendation Jan. 2.
