The Jamestown Police Department is continuing its investigation into a Dec. 26 crash that killed an 86-year-old man walking his bicycle.

The crash took place at Newland and Chautauqua avenues in Jamestown around 1:30 p.m. Police said the man, who has not been identified by name, was struck from behind by a white van while walking with his bike.

Investigators were able to identify the vehicle involved in the collision, and the driver — an 82-year-old woman — was located by the Lakewood-Busti Police Department several hours later.

She was transported to UPMC Chautauqua and later transferred to UPMC Hamot, in Erie, Pa., for treatment of undisclosed injuries.

On Monday, Capt. Robert Samuelson of the Jamestown Police Department said the woman likely had a medical emergency prior to the crash. He said she remains hospitalized, but couldn’t provide further information.

“(The) case will remain open until we can determine if we will charge or not,” Samuelson said.
