Poland Town Board Discusses Concerns About Route 62 Traffic

KENNEDY — Concerns over traffic on Route 62 at the four corners in Kennedy was again discussed at a recent meeting of the Poland Town Board.

A resident asked that board members spend time in the area to see how much of a problem the traffic creates. Now that the railroad crossing has been fixed, traffic does not slow down over it, the resident said, and many vehicles go a lot faster than the posted 35 mph.

The resident expressed the need for slower speeds and more safety for pedestrians and cyclists. The resident also said that it doesn’t matter what time of day or night, vehicles are causing problems.

Town Supervisor Kelly Snow noted that both roads are state roads, and the town does not have jurisdiction. When this matter was brought up previously, state officials decided that they would not lower the speed limit at that time. Snow told the resident that the town could reach out again to the state Department of Transportation, but she also suggested that the resident contact the state DOT as well to have the state reconsider their study.

Under new business, board members set the annual organizational meeting for Tuesday, Jan. 14, at 6:30 p.m., prior to the regular board meeting. The annual audit of the books for different town departments was scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 30, at 6:30 p.m.

Town Clerk Bonnita Wallace noted that the new dog control officer has a new phone. The number is 640-0541. She also told the board that the new computers for the assessor, town clerk and highway department have been received and installed.

Town and county property tax bills would be mailed out shortly. The first day for collections has been set for Jan. 6.

Town Assessor Heather Young-Deyell reported that renewals for the Enhanced Star program would now be done directly through the state. However, anyone applying for the Enhanced Star program for the first time must still apply through their local assessor’s office before March 1. Anyone who no longer files a tax return will get forms from the state, which must be filled out and returned to their local assessor’s office before March 1.

Highway Superintendent Larry Mee told board members that his department had been doing brush cutting along the roads during the milder weather periods. They have been keeping the roads sanded and salted, and their supplies are good for now.

The board next meets Tuesday, Jan. 14, at 7 p.m.
