Police Identify Man Killed In Route 394 Rollover Crash

The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office released the name of the man killed in a rollover crash Wednesday morning in the town of North Harmony.

Jamestown resident James A. Ellis, 63, was killed after his tractor-trailer cab was struck by a pickup truck at the intersection of Route 394 and Magnolia-Stedman Road shortly after 10 a.m. The cab rolled onto its roof following the collision.

Ellis was pronounced dead at the scene by a county coroner.

The driver of the pickup, who has not yet been identified, was transported to Westfield Memorial Hospital for treatment of unknown injuries. The Sheriff’s Office said the pickup failed to stop at a stop sign at Stedman Road and struck Ellis’ cab, which was traveling on Route 394.

Lou Acquisto was in his yard when he heard the crash.

“I heard the squealing of the breaks, the bouncing of the breaks and tires hitting the pavement,” Acquisto said. “I heard the crash, and then I heard another loud thud. I went up there and saw where that big truck was on its top. The driver of the pickup truck did get out and walked around but they took him to the hospital.”

The Sheriff’s Office said Thursday its investigation into the collision remained ongoing.
