FREWSBURG — A mural of an American flag, servicemen and a field of poppies took almost four years to complete in Frewsburg. But for those involved, the project created by students to honor veterans “was worth the wait.”

“The outpouring of positive feedback and praise these hard-working students have received is undeniable,” said Stephanie Bussman, a key contributor to the project and Frewsburg Central School graduate.

The mural can be seen on the outer garage wall at the Frewsburg American Legion Post No. 556. Known as the Legion Mural Project, Frewsburg Central School students began painting the project two years ago, but the idea was created almost four years ago.

Bussman, a recipient of the Samuel Derby Post No. 556 Scholarship, wanted to find an opportunity in the community for aspiring artists to showcase their talents. In collaboration with the Legion and Lindsey Vitello, Frewsburg’s art teacher, the project finally took form and was completed in August in time for the American Legion’s 100th anniversary.

The Frewsburg student artists, who were also involved in the school’s art club, included Dylan Pearson, a JCC freshman; Daniel Sisson, a JCC Freshman; Samantha Burkett, Frewsburg senior; Lydia Sadowski, Frewsburg senior; and Cooper Fuller, Frewsburg junior.

“These are outstanding students I knew would do an excellent job that required certain ability and craftsmanship,” Vitello said.

The group of students began the work two summers ago and completed the mural’s final touches only recently.

Vitello, Bussman and the five students came together to create a tribute to veterans on the side of the Legion’s garage. Vitello noted that the only instructions were to create a painting that was “patriotic and had a positive message,” one that represented the Legion.

“It took longer than we anticipated, for sure, but as soon as you see it it solidifies the project was well worth the time and commitment,” Vitello said.
