LAKEWOOD — U.S. Representative Tom Reed visited Cummins Engines on Tuesday to take a tour of the facility and celebrate the facility’s 45th anniversary.

“I am proud of the work this company has done,” said Reed, R-Corning.

Cummins is a corporation that designs, manufactures, distributes and services diesel and natural gas engines and related technologies. This includes fuel systems, controls, air handling, filtration, emission solutions and electrical power generation systems. The Lakewood plant is one of the largest heavy duty diesel engine plant in the world.

Cummins, since building its first engine in 1981, produces typically around 100,000 engines annually. Last year, Cummins celebrated producing 2 million engines. This year, it’s celebrating 45 years of service locally.

“We credit much of our success to the hard-working employees that commit themselves to provide products and services that exceed our customers’ expectations,” said Anna Dibble, Cummins Jamestown Engine Plant manager.

“From our first engine built in 1981 to our innovative technologies, which have reduced emissions by 98%, JEP provides engines that offer solutions that represent the strength of our company and the power, reliability and durability of a Cummins heavy-duty engine,” said Brett Merritt, Cummins vice-president of On-Highway Engine Business.

Reed started off his visit with a tour of the factory, shaking hands with a lot of the employees and learning about their jobs in the company. He learned about how the factory works and got to view most of the machines in action. Reed also learned of some of the new products the company has been working on.

After the tour, there was a quick ceremony where Reed presented a plaque to celebrate the 45 years the Jamestown Cummins has been in business.

“Cummins has been in business for around 100 years,” Reed said, “this plaque is to celebrate the 45th year of operation for this factory. We are with you and the community thanks you. On behalf of the community, we want to say ‘job well done.'”

Reed met with members of the Cummins team to discuss some of the challenges and opportunities associated with their production activity and opportunities for manufacturing across the country.

Headquartered in Columbus, Indiana, Cummins employs about 62,600 people since its founding in 1919. It serves 190 countries and territories through a network of approximately 600 company-owned and independent distributor locations. The Jamestown company has also donated millions of dollars to charities.

“We give our employees paid time off to do community work,” said Emily Foster, director of government relations. “They’ll do volunteer work and help out charities, and it’s just one of the ways we give back to our community.”
