Since 1999, students and teachers at Jamestown High School have participated in “Penny Wars,” a fundraising competition with the goal of helping a local cause.

The annual fundraiser event typically picks a cause in the community to support. This year the donations were given Jamestown Teacher Kathleen Ellis who suffered a severe accident at home. She is currently in rehabilitation for her injuries.

The 12th grade class raised $1,275.12, the 11th grade class raised $422.49, the 10th grade class raised $666.34, the 9th grade class raised $450. The total amount of $3,000 was given to the Ellis family.

Ellis’ family members were in attendance to receive the $3,000 check. Her son John Ellis and mother Ann Earle accepted the check on stage in front of the entire school alongside members of the senior class.

“I’m not much of a speaker, but I’ll tell you I appreciate everything everyone has done here today,” Earle said on stage.

Tony Dolce aid the $3,000 amount is about the average take each year, but noted that the amount fluctuates year to year. Dolce praised the efforts of the students who make up the JHS student body and their efforts to support the community each year.

“It’s kind of amazing that kids come together and that this has become a great tradition,” he said.

Dolce described the event as being family oriented and unique to Jamestown. He said since the event’s creation, the district has probably raised tens of thousands of dollars over the years.

Part of the Penny Wars tradition includes students and faculty get pied by a desert or slimed by a orange and green substance. Superintendent Bret Apthorpe was slimed this year.

Christian Dolce, co-president of the senior class, said the event is a great tradition that the district offers.

“I think it’s a really good opportunity for the community and our school to raise money for someone that’s in need,” he said.

Christian Dolce said the event ties nicely with the holiday season.
