Editor’s Note: The Chautauqua Region Community Foundation is commemorating its 40th anniversary this year. This week’s story was inspired by gifts to the John Edward McLaughlin Family Fund.

Since 2007, the Randolph community has benefitted from the foresight of John McLaughlin and his family.

Born and raised in Randolph, McLaughlin graduated from Randolph Central School in 1932. During World War II, he was employed by the Defense Factory in Niagara Falls. Upon completing his service, he returned to Randolph and worked as a mechanic at the former Randolph Motors.

In 1941, he married Beatrice Cain, another Randolph native, and they welcomed a son, Patrick, in 1948. Together, the family owned and operated Cain Oil Company, a gas service station and small store in East Randolph, for more than 20 years.

Although Patrick was born with several medical and physical problems, his parents treated him like any other child and he spent his free time working at the family business and volunteering with community organizations.

When both of his parents passed, a trust was established to care for Patrick until his death. In 2006, at the age of 58, Patrick passed away in Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

Following Patrick’s death, the remainder of the McLaughlin’s estate was to be used to create two permanent endowment funds to care for the community the McLaughlins spent their lives.

The John Edward McLaughlin Family Fund was established at the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation to support charitable activities of religious and non-religious organizations in Randolph.

In just over 10 years, this fund has awarded more than $75,000 to dozens of community projects, initiatives and activities.

Most recently, the fund awarded grants to the Randolph Presbyterian Church, Randolph Regional EMS Corp., Randolph Historical Society and Randolph Area Community Development Corporation.

The second, The John Edward McLaughlin Family Memorial Scholarship Fund, was established to assist a graduating Randolph High School senior who is hardworking and demonstrates financial need. Priority is given to students entering the fields of special education, engineering, science or medicine.

More than $60,000 has been awarded to 75 students since its creation in 2007.

Although the McLaughlin family is no longer able to witness the impact their generosity has had in their community, their legacy will continue to inspire students, community members and local organizations, forever.
