Girton’s Flowers will be handing out hundreds of flowers to commuters today.

The event is part of the Society of American Florists’ national Petal It Forward Program. It is in partnership with the SAF, of which Girton’s is a member. This year’s event will be the first of its kind in Jamestown. The random-acts-of-kindness effort is in response to SAF data that shows the positive emotional benefits flowers can bring.

“We see the positive impact day in and day out when we make our flower deliveries,” said Susan Carlson of Girton’s Flowers.

With that in mind, the Pedal It Forward team is intent to show happiness not just to Jamestown but everywhere. The team suggests that residents give a single flower to a loved one, coworkers and even strangers. The event will take place throughout the workday in downtown Jamestown. PIF members will be distributing flowers along Third Street.

“People love to get flowers ‘just because’ so we wanted to create random smiles today, and give people a chance to do the same for someone else,” Carlson added.
