The Institute of Transportation Engineers New York Upstate Section Achievement Awards committee has chosen the city of Jamestown’s pedestrian bridges project as 2018 Transportation Project of the Year.

The transformative project features two new pedestrian bridges, which add connectivity over the Chadakoin River to the Greater Jamestown Riverwalk trail and Panzarella Park. Located directly south of the new National Comedy Center, the bridges will greatly enhance pedestrian access along the waterfront and act as catalysts for future economic development.

The design team for the $2 million project included Union Concrete & Construction as the general contractor, CPL as design engineer and the city of Jamestown. The two COR-TEN steel superstructure spans, featuring wood decks and LED lighting, were installed in the fall of 2017 when prefabricated sections were spliced together and set in place. One bridge connects the north shore of Jamestown Riverwalk to Panzarella Park, 189 feet long, and the second, (140 feet long, connects the north and south shores of Riverwalk adjacent to the Washington Street Bridge.

The NY Upstate Transportation Project Award recognizes outstanding transportation projects that demonstrate advancement in the use of technology, practical application or implementation techniques, and coordination with multiple jurisdictions and/or agencies. Additionally, the award is deserving based on the application of sound transportation planning and engineering principals.

The pedestrian bridges were also previously honored by the American Public Works Association’s NY Chapter — Western Branch.
