DUNKIRK — A blaze that ripped through a vacant Deer Street home in Dunkirk during the night of July 4 hasn’t been determined.

Chief Mike Edwards said Monday he wasn’t sure if the investigation was officially closed, but he confirmed that the cause to what sparked the fire on Deer Street months ago hasn’t been determined. An investigation was conducted by Dunkirk and Chautauqua County investigators.

The blaze that began just before 10 p.m. on the Fourth of July damaged two homes on Deer Street. City firefighters arrived on scene to see a two-story, 434. Deer St. residence in flames. The home was unoccupied.

Flames spread to an adjacent home at 432 Deer St. The residence also suffered some damage. Fire crews remained on scene for more than four hours before the blaze was contained and out.

A demolition of the 434 Deer St. home is set to take place this year.
