Cattaraugus Man Faces Arson Charges

CATTARAUGUS — A 20-year-old is facing arson and burglary charges following an investigation into a fire at the former Cattaraugus Central School.

The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday the arrest of Gage C. Weyrough of Cattaraugus after an investigation into the June 24 fire. Weyrough was charged by deputies with third-degree arson, third-degree burglary and third-degree criminal mischief.

According to the Olean Times Herald, more than 75 volunteer firefighters from five departments responded to the former school at South and Washington streets around 6:30 p.m. A member of the Cattaraugus Fire Department was reportedly driving by the building and spotted smoke coming from some of the windows.

The fire is believed to have started on a wooden stage in the gymnasium/auditorium, the Olean Times Herald reported.

Weyrough was arraigned in New Albion Town Court and remanded to the Cattaraugus County Jail in lieu of $25,000. The Sheriff’s Office Criminal Bureau was assisted by the Cattaraugus County Fire Investigation Team.
